Our first Colourstart Edge seminar, “Common scalp conditions: What every hairdresser should know”, is led by Amsterdam‑based trichologist and medical biochemist Jacky van Driel. In this exclusive session for Colourstart subscribers, Jacky shares what hair professionals really need to know about recognising scalp issues in the chair and supporting clients safely.
Jacky explains how to spot the difference between simple dandruff and more complex inflammatory conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. She also shows real case images where “flakes” are actually signs of infection or autoimmune disease, and why these must be referred to a GP, dermatologist or trichologist rather than managed in the salon.
The session focuses on what you can do every day in practice: how to talk about scalp concerns without diagnosing, when to pause services and refer, and how certain ingredients can help or aggravate sensitive scalps. You’ll come away with more confidence in reading the scalp, choosing gentler routines and knowing when salon products are not enough.
Now, Charlotte Lucas takes the discussion further by exploring how nutrition underpins every aspect of hair and scalp health, linking back to the hormonal and physiological themes introduced in our earlier sessions.
