Making change the new normal

From my experience, once you accept change is needed, it’s amazing how quickly it can become the new normal. Often, you’ll barely remember the old way of doing things. As salon owners and managers, we try to anticipate changes, but some challenges or opportunities come unexpectedly, leaving us feeling unprepared.

Changing for the right reasons

The key is to ensure you’re making changes for the right reasons, not just reacting under pressure. Take time to assess the facts, embrace change, and measure impact. And don’t be afraid to revisit and refine your approach. In this industry, progress comes from collaboration with your team.

I used to think constant change was a good thing, I’d jump from one improvement to the next. But in hindsight, I realise nothing had the chance to settle or work in the best possible way.

Control your changes

Change isn’t always about speed, it’s about purpose. Sometimes a quick adjustment is necessary, but it’s equally important to avoid putting everything on your shoulders. Decisions in business should consider the history, the impact on your stakeholders, your team, product suppliers, and even the business itself. Knee-jerk reactions or hoping for the best rarely lead to sustainable outcomes, or in some cases, any perceived benefit at all.

Collaboration is key. Talking with your team, sharing challenges, and listening to their ideas often leads to the best solutions. My clients at MySalonManager really value this approach, it’s about finding the right decisions together, not forcing change.

After the decision, if you can monitor the results, keep talking to the relevant people, and adjust if needed. And if something doesn’t work for a measurable period of time (not the first hurdle), detach from it and move on to what might work better. The key is to stay flexible and focused on progress.

As famous chef Marco Pierre White once said: “I was going for perfection. And perfection, it turns out, is simply a lot of little things done very well.”
